How Very Important Volunteers Are
7 November 2000

Press Release

A great deal was achieved during this summer and it is with great hope that we realise that the Associao Humanitria Habitat in Braga, is no longer a stranger in people's hearts. As such, many have been the incentives and congratulations that we have received. We feel respected and supported by the community. However, and running the risk of being somehow ungrateful, the truth is that respect and approval do not build houses.

Because there was a lack of volunteer participation from the inception of the "Portugal Build 2000" the building of twelve houses in Palmeira the houses will not be ready before winter is over. This means that we will probably not be able to prevent another harsh and cold winter for the families we are trying to help. Instead, this winter will still meet them in houses and stalls were, believe me, you would not think it possible for someone to live in: places where the walls are damp, the ceiling is falling into pieces in the living-room, coldness is a constant presence. At the end, the feeling is frustration. Basically, because it does not need to be like this. Because it is not impossible (yet) to finish the houses on time. It not an impossible dream.

It is our belief in the Association that, somehow, the importance and necessity of volunteers for the completion of this project is not just important. Maybe that is the case with most associations, but for Habitat, they are more than important, they are essential. As such, the completion of the houses depends on the number of people that make themselves available to help, even if just for a couple of hours.

Basically, the association does not work without volunteers. It is an original way of working, transparent (any person can be a part of it, know of its structure, of its accomplishments, problems or even spendings!) and that aims and allows the participation of a great number of people. Volunteers are present in such different moments of the activity of the association as family selection, fund-raising, public relations, and so on. However, at the moment in Portugal it is in construction that their participation is most needed.

Following the saying that if the mountain does not go to Mohammed, Mohammed goes to the mountain, members of Associao Humanitria Habitat have decided to start a promotion campaign in the University of Braga. They were there last Monday, they are there this Tuesday, and they will be there on several upcoming dates for at least the next couple of weeks.

If this campaign is successful, maybe the houses can still be built before winter ends. What a difference that would make! On the other hand, a massive participation of students can also call the attention of other areas of the community. After all, and as we have experienced through the precious participation of GVTeams during this summer, volunteerism is not only for young people.

We have great expectations on the results of this initiative. If praising turns into action, we will change the lives of twelve families. Time is running fast and winter is approaching. We rely on all of you, in Braga and the rest of Portugal, as well as internationally, to support us on this.
